The aim of this project was to promote sustainable urban mobility with the method of “digital nudging”. It examined how real-time data, for example the weather and traffic, could be combined with psychological incentives to encourage city residents to voluntarily switch to more sustainable modes of transportation (walking, public transport, cycling).
During the project, researchers closely collaborated with the cities of Salzburg and Uppsala. They came up with digital methods, that based on the current location sent suggestions or notifications to the users. They created a central “nudging storage”, where successful behavioral-influencing techniques were gathered.
Most significant outcome of the project, which concluded in 2024, was the creation of the Digital Nudging Handbook and a public toolbox, which offer practical guidance and policy recommendations to urban decision-makers on the application of nudging techniques. The research highlighted the crucial role of personalization, and real-time, context-specific messages have been shown to encourage sustainable transportation at a higher rate than general appeals.
