About the project: 

The Baltic2Hand project aims to improve textile reuse and reduce textile waste by developing the business models of second-hand companies. 

Generally, the underuse of textile is caused by a lack of circularity in the textile and fashion industries leading to an overflow of textile waste. All CB countries must work together to find solutions to prevent unnecessary used textile exports from Finland and Sweden to Estonia, Latvia, and elsewhere. 

The targeted improvements in textile reuse and reduce textile waste, which will be achieved through improving the business models of second-hand companies and other companies that want to add a second-hand operation to their business; and also through enhancing consumers’ use of second-hand market as both sellers and consumers. 

Expected results 

The co-creative service design process with the target organizations and consumers will: 

  • Improve textile reuse 
  • Reduce textile waste 
  • Provide background research on the second-hand market in the Baltic region 
  • Generate new ideas towards more sustainable secondhand market 
  • Develop improved or new circular business models and services 
  • Develop open access educational materials  

The main groups that benefit from the project activities: 

  • Second-hand companies (charities, SMEs) 
  • Other fashion and textile companies that would like to add second-hand operations to their business 
  • Business support organizations as well as consumers. 

 

The activities include: 

  1. Research for defining current problems and needs of the industry and consumers 
  1. Regional cross-border workshops for ideation, concepting, prototyping, testing and piloting of innovative solutions 
  1. Local co-creation workshops
  1. Implementation coaching 
  1. Stakeholder management and commitment activities and 
  1. Open online education. 

The project applies a service design approach. It offers a carefully-designed and industry-tailored set of innovative co-creation activities with organizations, consumers, experts, and other stakeholders. The solutions developed within the project will be piloted in cooperation with different partners.
